This sketch could be better, but it gets the point across. This is a new design for the Mantis, because looking back at old designs from elementary school, well, it (unintentionally, of course!) looked like a... certain part of the male anatomy. >_>;;; If anyone wants, I can throw out a sketch of the old Mantis, though.
This drawing was done before the last batch, so it's not quite as quality. Anyways, the coloring didn't come out as good as I planned, but it's okay. Kyle was the main character, the captain of the ship. All question marks on his profile mark uncertaintly or assumptions. IJF stands for Intergalactic Justice Federation. I'll be writing stuff about the IJF and the Earth of that time period and other worlds and such, too.
Hunter was Kyle's first recruit, though often he wasn't as prominent as other characters. I'm not so sure on the coloring job here, either...
Spencer was one of the most important characters in the series, and was the eldest of us. Originally, Spencer was a Jedi, used the force, and such, so I went back and changed this all to Samurai and Samurai abilities. Not that much of a change, since Jedi ARE space samurai, but whatever. If you can't read my handwriting, on the diagram of the glasses, it mentions the circle on the right lens is a light, but it can also scan vital statistics of people. The line on the left lens translates other languages to english. Pocket's design is from what I remember of how Spencer drew and described him. In reality, Pocket was a pencil sharpener (But it did look somewhat like the pocket of The Mantis!)
This is only sketches, no real proportion assigned yet, and no bio or anything. I'm doing the real sheet after JaX's. I changed my character a little (Because, uh, the original was, uh, a GUY)... But it's basically the same. I come from a place called Sky Palace (I'm thinking of maybe changing the name.) which is a LITTLE like Cloud City in the original design, but in reality it's sort of an ancient-oriented place. I even use an actual Katana rather than plasma/photon/energy based weapons. But to counter the new tech, it has an electromagnetic ward on it so that the newer type wepons won't just slice through it. It makes me a somewhat different character.
KOEHNE THE FIFTH! Based on newcomer Evan, you'll notice right off that he looks strikingly like Lupin the Third. That's because not only does the real Evan look like Lupin, he even ACTS like Lupin. So, throwing my "reference-down-tonage" out the window, I have Koehne the Fifth, a giant Lupin the Third reference. This profile was actually done second (Which is why it looks more like the Kyle one [Though, IMO, the art isn't as quality as the Kyle one] and less like the others), because I wasn't sure how to do the designs for any of the others, but knew exactly what I wanted for Koehne the Fifth.

Mantis #1 Overview wrote: Kyle is wandering the streets of Rome, thinking, when notes Hunter being taken away by Alien Empire agents. He sneaks after them, finds Hunter in a cell. The two talk, and Kyle exits, thinking once again. He begins thinking about Hunter and how the forces of the Empire are controlling the galaxy unjustly. He shakes his head, figuring there’s nothing he can do.
The next day, Kyle sees a notice of Hunter’s execution in battle at the Coliseum later that day, and he decides to finally take a stand.
At the Coliseum, an alien is brutally beating down on Hunter when Kyle jumps in and attacks it from out of nowhere. Together, the two of them finish the Alien off, and Kyle takes off, dragging Hunter with him. Hunter’s bloodloss causes him to collapse along the way, but Kyle carries him. Finding a small ship owned by the Empire, the two steal it and head into space. Hunter, who is far too crippled to do much of anything without seeing medical attention, suggests they go to the Intergalactic Justice Federation HQ in a nearby system. Getting there, the two are received with a warm welcome, and Hunter is seen to immediately. Kyle expresses his want to work for them, and the head of IJF decides to recruit him, and even give him a new ship: The Mantis. Spencer and JaX are also assigned to them to be part of the crew. Hunter and Kyle are both glad to see a skilled warrior such as Spencer, but Hunter isn’t too happy about the 19-year-old JaX. Kyle eventually convinces him with the fact that JaX is an esteemed scientist, and so Hunter reluctantly welcomes him. And so, a new force for freedom is born.
