Ah, as in why people started using them, why they actually have power, or something else in particular about birth stones? If its why they work its mostly due to them being considered symbols. Symbols have power and always have even in the spiritual realms... where they may even have more power than in the physical one.

Ellen: ...Yes, that's pretty much it. I'd never entirely understood how those pretty little rocks could have mystical power, just that they do.

Well they are symbols that hail to the properties associated with yourself. Its similar to creating a charm with the constellation you were born under engraved into it essentially. All are aimed at invoking and enhancing the natural traits you possess as one born under those signs and symbols as well as granting you an edge of protection.

Ah, then now that we have the materials lets start shall we? What kind of alchemy would you prefer? The one where you infuse elemental spirits to create an item or one where you simply perform a ritual that reforms physical materials to your design?
