Feminizing country

Postby Mitera Nikkou » Sat Dec 13, 2008 9:39 pm

I can't remember where I heard it, or from who, but someone on TV once brought up the subject of how our culture seems to be falling into a trend involving sex versus intelligence. For instance, sitcoms where men are usually portrayed as the idiots while the women are usually more sensible and counter to their antics. On the other hand, I also once heard someone say that there might be something to the idea that male comedians have some kind of edge, with their impact on an audience, that women don't have, whether it's due to culture or not. And then there was this whole thing with Sarah Palin, where she might have been as dumb as George Bush (if not dumber; or, at least, I think he knew that Africa was a continent), yet still drew more interest than those still supporting Bush after seven years in office.

So, what I'm wondering, is if anyone sees anything in this. While I'm sure that some here would be happy that females are being viewed in a more positive light, I wonder if it's not just for taking advantage of some convenience. Or, perhaps, it's in response to the fear of being labeled as sexist. Or a combination of things.

Your thoughts?

They have already done that. The sitcom is called "I Love Lucy", and it's still a riot. You should watch it sometime. It will make you LOL among other things.

When I look at it, I look at the "Flintstones", "The Jetsons", or According to Jim. What do you see? A house wife, and a husband who works. (With the exception of Barney, who is frequently unemployed.) The man is supportive, loving, and tries to do his best to provide for his family. More Frequently in the Flintstones, and According to Jim than the Jetsons do you often see the fathers doing:

Crazy shenanigans to better themselves.
Is pushed into a situation for reasons beyond his control.
Or has a plan back fire resulting in one of the two situations above to happen.

The wife tends to be the husbands voice of reason. She is wise, suspicious, and sometimes overzealous. But in the end, the husband make up his mistake and it all ends with a kiss or a hug.

Actually, Lucy was the idiot in I Love Lucy, not Ricky.

Either way, you were answering a question I didn't ask. It wasn't a question of it being a new development or not, but the reasons behind said development. (Since it seems more prevalent these days.) That's what I'm wondering about. Are men just somehow more funny for being men? Does it have something to do with sexism? Is there some other reason? Or is it a combination of these things?

my brother, is suprisingly inteligent for an eleven year old brought up the topic of reverse sexism with me...

he said pretty much that

Currently people are treating women with a double edged sword, offering them the same treatment of men, yet also allowing to give the women the 'chivalry' that they recieved back when they didn't have the same treatment as men, what is happening is that women go "We want to be treated the same as men, but have the men treat us better then we treat them.".

I think my brother should go into philosophy or law...he would excel extremely.

I'm willing to bet that, if a man were in the same position, they would probably say, "it's just business; nothing personal."
