Did aliens visit humans in the ancient past?

The people I live with are into this sort of thing, and I figured that making a poll about it wouldn't hurt.

Only if God's an alien.

And that's all I'm gonna say.

Then you should have gone for the option above it. ;p

Obviously I should have worded that differently.

Indeed. It's one thing to be a supernatural being, and another to be an alien playing god.

Good thing I always set it so people can re-vote, if the need arises. ;p

I chose the third option. I think it's possible, but what could they have to gain? If any aliens came here and did stuff as an experiment, they're likely dead, unless they have an incredibly long life span. Also, if aliens were responsible for stuff here on Earth, why not visit once in a while? Share some of their cosminc knowledge and what not.

Incidently, was this poll in anyway inspired by Stephen Hawking's recent decisions on human-alien interaction?

While I've heard about that, it wasn't the inspiration for it. One of my guardians had recorded a three-hour special about the possibility of aliens visiting Earth in the distant past and being seen, leaving behind evidence of their presence, or interacting with humans directly.

According to Mr. Hawking, if aliens had visited us, they would have wiped us out. Of course, that could always be used to explain why dinosaurs got wiped out...

Either way, you would think if they visited in the past, then they would make more appearances now. Not just to pick up drunk people who then sell the story to tabloids.

Well, Mr. Hawking makes a terrible assumption. An alien race has all of the potential to have a vastly different perspective than humans do, and could have very well have had just as many reasons to come into contact with us as they would have to not do so. Even if they never came here, it's still possible that, if they knew of Earth, and the life that was on it, they would have a reason to avoid visiting the planet entirely, rather than just up and wiping us out for some reason. Human nature isn't necessarily alien nature.

That said, even the reports and stories we hear today could just be from people wanting attention, crazies, or secret human operations and technologies. I honestly wouldn't doubt the latter, because ancient Greece is a prime example, but that's not the point. There are tons of mysteries in the past, and some people attribute them to alien influence. Maybe it's true, and maybe it's not. Thus, a poll to see what people around here thought.

I'm gonna saaaaay.... no. :o

Mostly because I'd rather not have a significant portion of my childhood terror be justified. :P

Hmm. I don't really doubt that there's something more in this universe than us, or the multiverse for that matter. Truly, it'd be arrogant to think that only one planet out of the very, very, very many planets out there has managed to gain lifeforms.
There might be some alien race that has stumbled upon us at some point. We can't truly know, neither can we disprove it.

There's an interesting passage in the Bible that speaks of a special village in the mountains. IIRC, it's during the time Moses et al. walks from Egypt to what is now Israel. Two runners are sent out ahead of the group, to scout the area. When they return they speak of giant humans, I can't recall how tall they were supposed to be, but they'd still be considered very tall. (Think it was seven feet/above two meters or so.) The gene that causes people, both male and female, to grow to that height has been identified, and it's very uncommon. Some consider that gene to originate from the mentioned village. But they also say that it was unnatural for humans to be that tall back then, it has to be due to outside influences.
Whether any of that is true or not I can't say, but I remember seeing a documentary about it on Discovery.

It's also interesting to note that humans have started to come up with viable options for how to build flying saucers, options that would explain why they are always round in all stories. All we need to manage now is a propulsion system that works both in atmosphere and in space.

Humans need to wake up and smell the roses imnsho.

I can't really say definitively yes or no, but the possibility is indeed out there.
