When I was little I loved Hobbits/Halflings, but then I read the The Silmarillion. I will grant that there are some holes and questions in the text. There is however an almost Greek tragedy quality to the story. Reading Tolkien's history of the elves, I was enraptured. While I know he presented just one vision of elves, it created a soft sport in my heart in general.
