He was the last known surviving member of the Pinta Island Tortoise subspecies, and he has
passed on at almost 100-years-old.
A species has just gone extinct.

that is, if there isn't a hidden colony somewhere. There have been times when a species thought to have been extinct has been found again.
Still, that's a bummer. But if he was the last, there wasn't much hope anyway. <_<
