The Business' Career Fair

Postby Whatevr89532 » Fri Mar 02, 2018 1:18 pm

Ads everywhere, and I do mean everywhere, have shown up to let people know about a career fair being held in one of Muffinville's least shady community centers. One such ad is a flyer that says "Need a job?! The Business can help! Bring your resume.." and then the time and date and location.
Another is a slightly surreal TV ad; it starts out normal enough: A cool-looking guy in shades points out at the viewer, saying, "Do you need a job? Do you like making money? The Business is interested in hiring you! Please bring your resume. We accept all kinds of people with all kinds of talent! We are an equal opportunity employer. That's right--we'll humans, elves, orcs, dwarves, cyborgs, robots, sapient animals, part-animal people, walking plushes, animate objects, floating aetherial beings, sentient air, ...", and it goes on like this, listing more and more kinds of possible people for like a straight hour and a half with either photographs of that kind of person labeled "Actual employee" or drawings labeled "Artist's rendition", all while floating text on the screen continues to say "Bring your resume!" and the time, date, and location of the event. Yes, the Business rented out a long span of some channel's airtime for this.
Besides that there's the usual internet ads all over, and all the major Muffinvillian job sites have a listing placed for people to come to the job fair and get a job in all kinds of qualifications.

And now, it's the big day! The community center doors are wide open, leading into a big expanse of a room arranged into several 'hallways' with little tables lining each. Big banners give various overarching descriptions of what kind of job is on offer, and just about every job imaginable seems to be represented, from retail or service jobs to item-enchanting to robot building and repair to voluntary gladiatorial combat. Behind each table is a cloaked figure standing (?) perfectly still, with a single little circular greenish glow under the hood where one would expect is eyes to be. The community center speakers are playing a slightly strange song for background music.

((No specific plans for this, but I thought it was high time The Business stepped into the limelight again. So, if you've got a character who could use some sort of job, or with some other reason to talk to these robots, or someone who would be inclined to try and wreck the career fair for one reason or another (though, expect some resistance), feel free. Some jobs might even come with a transformation if someone seems to want it to.))

OK, Yoko, you can do this. Today you're going to get a job, and hopefully keep it for more than a week... *Yoko enters the community center, resume in hand, and starts checking out each table.*

There seems to be a "general information" table near the very front, and the cloaked figure there waves at Yoko...somehow...without actually showing an arm or hand. "Wel-come, miss," it says with the slightly stilted speech characteristic of The Business. "What kind of job are you in-terested in?"

Ah, hello. *Yoko stops to speak with the greeter.* To be honest, I couldn't exactly you what I'm looking for. I'm desperate enough that I'd be willing to look at most things if the pay's good enough...

The figure "nods" somehow, under its cloak. "Per-haps I could provide a suggestion. If you would allow me a look at your re-sume?"

Right, of course... *Yoko hands her resume over to the hooded figure. Looking over it reveals that she's worked a number of jobs in several different fields over the last few years. She's been an office worker, a waitress, a gardener, a maid, a construction worker... You name it, she's done it. However, for one reason or another none of these careers seem to have lasted very long - a month or two seeming to be the max. This has left her with a wide skill set, at least...*

The cloaked figure takes the resume in a "hand" (still obscured by the cloak despite reaching out to get it), and its glowing eye flashes briefly, not bright or wide-reaching enough to be an eyesore but enough to briefly cover the page in green light. It makes a small "bee-beep" sound sort of like a grocery-store scanner. Then it repeats this with each non-blank side of paper. "In-teresting. You would appear to be i-deal for the jobs of: Un-dercover agent, pri-vate eye, or po-litical assassin, with a min-imal amount of extra training. Are any of those of in-terest?" It offers the resume back, apparently finished "reading" it.

OK... *Yoko takes her resume back.* Well, I'd say those are all new ones for me... What would the private eye job entail, exactly?

"In-vestigating to ob-tain information at the cus-tomer's request. I am not pro-grammed with as many pre-cise details as the spe-cialist on the topic, if you are in-terested." The robot makes a noise like a printer briefly, and then produces a piece of paper with a map of the layout of the current table arrangement of the whole career fair, with the "private eye" table highlighted in bright yellow. It seems like this falls under the broader category of "Investigative work", and has as neighbors such potential jobs as "forensic accountant" and "programming troubleshooter". The paper is set down on the table where Yoko can pick it up if she wants.

Uh-huh... *Yoko grabs the paper off the table for reference.* I'm not gonna lie, you're a little strange... But still, thank you. *Map in hand, Yoko enters the main area of the fair to track down the private eye table.*

The fair is rather well-organized, and besides getting past some of the people in the building crowd of NPCs attending, Yoko shouldn't have much trouble reaching the indicated table. It does appear that every other person behind a table is the same sort of glowy-eyed cloaked figure, with very similar speech patterns. The one behind the private eye table waves to her as she comes near, as if expecting her.

Ah, there we go. *Yoko approaches the private eye table.* Are you the one I'd talk to about the detective job?

"Cer-tainly. Stop me if you have a clarifying question."
The cloaked figure lays out a bunch of pieces of paper with various infographics on them facing Yoko's direction, and points to each one in turn as it speaks. "Our Private Eye agen-cy works like most. We as-sign a case to one or more em-ployees to inves-tigate. Our cases vary from per-sonal pursuits to le-gal counsel inves-tigative help to aiding lo-cal law enforcement in cri-minal cases. We find ca-ses and offer them to rel-evant workers, which can be accepted or de-clined. Pay is on a per-case ba-sis, with re-ward based on mer-it and ef-fort but usually not on the fin-al success of the case. Your ex-perience in particular makes you i-deal for the role of 'in-visible', someone ab-le to blend in as an ap-parent employee of var-ious places in order to see, hear, or oth-erwise sense things which would not be ad-mitted or shown di-rectly to someone known to be an investigator."
