The Princess and the Coin--A Day of Wishes

Postby Anonymouse » Fri May 11, 2012 12:23 pm

In the middle of an abandoned Muffinville parking lot rests a single silver coin. It seems to glint in the sunlight, but not in quite the same way that any of the pieces of broken glass, smashed warmachines, or other reflective surfaces in the lot do.

Narrator's Note: As of now, a certain individual that most will recognize as Princess Melanie of the Muffinville royal family seems to be giving out some form of charity on the street across from the Muffin Museum of Unnatural History. Perhaps some brave souls might take advantage of this opportunity?

There was a soft crunching sound, as a pair of red canvas sneakers with white toe caps walked across the parking lot, coming to a stop beside the silver coin. Coming out of the sneakers were a pair of black and white striped tights, covering a thin pair of legs, while a black velvet dress fell over them at mid-thigh. It had short sleeves, and a white, round collar. Melanie, the teenage witch tilted her head, peering at the coin, her red hair held up in bunched pigtails either side of her head.

Bending at the knees, she leaned down, and studied the coin for a moment or two, and then reached out, pinching her forefinger and thumb around it's edges, and went to pick it up.

The coin doesn't seem to be a local minting. A roughly-hewn jester is on one side, grinning, under which, in small letters, it reads 'wish granted'. The other side is more abstract--a strange whirl of lines that don't seem to have much any meaning at all that the which can make out.

Melanie turned the coin over, squinting slightly, scrutinising the detail of the jester and the letters beneath, and then the lines on the other side. Her brow creased slightly in thought, and then she closed one hand into a fist, laying the silver coin on top of her thumb, before flicking it up into the air. Twisting her hand, she spread out her palm and caught it when it fell, pressing it onto the top of the other hand, and then looked down to see which side was facing up.

The coin flips! Over and over and lands squarely in her palm. When she looks down, the 'wish granted' side seems to be facing up...But nothing else seems to have happened.

After a couple of seconds had passed with nothing happening, Melanie gave the coin a frustrated glare. "I wish... to know who's behind this... ", she said out loud, and then her green eyes glanced about the abandoned parking lot, as if expecting something, or someone.

The jester's grin seems to flicker in the dim light of the parking lot...but nothing happens.

"Huh... ", she murmured as she thought she caught a trick of the light on the coin. Bringing it against her dress, she rubbed it against the black velvet a few times and then held it up in the light to take another look. "What tricks are you hiding, hmm?".

The coin is rubbed clean, the slight smudging easily removed. It seems to twinkle slightly, but perhaps not abnormally so for a coin made of now-polished silver.

It unfortunately fails to answer the girl, however.

Closing her fingers over the coin, Melanie snaps with her other hand, and in an instant, was in Muffinville's town square, and started to march toward the museum. Hurrying up the steps, the doors flew open ahead of her with a motion of her hand, and she made her way inside.

The Muffinville Museum is ever a bit of a strange place--half the dusty old exhibits one might expect, and half...local history. But then, most of the locals have had just enough of the various invasions when they'd lived through them, so it wasn't a place that was heavily patronized. Indeed, as the girl bursts in, the main hall seems relatively deserted. A tall, well-dressed man turns to look at her, seemingly having just finished adjusting one of the miniature dioramas of the city being ovverrun by robots. Or zombies? It's easy to mix up. He clears his throat, adjusting his glasses.

"May I help you?

He's surprisingly young for what she takes to be a museum curator--probably no more then his late twenties.

Melanie didn't seem interested in the displays, but headed straight for what she assumed to be the curator. Her green eyes studied the suprisingly young man for a moment, before giving a casual shrug of her shoulders. "Maybe".

Holding out her hand, she uncurled her fingers, revealing the coin sitting in her palm. "Has Muffinville ever used a currency like this?".

The man frowns slightly, giving just the hint of a sigh as he walks over to study the coin, "I'm not a walking encyclopedia, you know..." Lowering himself slightly to get a good look at it, he raises on eyebrow, and then drops it with a small shrug. "I rather doubt it. I can check the books though if you like, Miss...?

She glanced at the coin, then back to the man and nodded. "Melanie... ", she said, seeming rather frustrated. Twisting the coin between her fingers, she studied the other side of it, the one with the odd lines. "Quiet day, huh?".

The man blinks. "Oh, this? This is normal. There's not a lot to attract people to the museum."

He shrugs, retreating back behind the main desk, eventually pulling out a book--Currency of the Muffinlands--and starts flipping through.

The back of the coin is definitely carved--not just random scratchings or something. There's no discernible pattern insofar as she can tell though. Nor does it seem to be any kind of magic circle of glyph that she recognizes. It seems almost freeform.
