A Dying World

Postby Vomica » Sun Feb 12, 2012 5:37 am

It was once wrote by one of the most influential writers of the Modern era, "That is not dead which can eternal lie. And with strange aeons even death may die." Aeons. Death. Eternity. But what if all of these are lies? To all though, each of these are by far more than just simply strange. Time marches on, and things changes. All things change... that is the way of life. For life to grow and continue, life must change. Life is dynamic. That which stagnates and stays in isolation... that is death. All things that live move, and all things that want to move must first live. ...but with all laws... there are those that see gain in breaking them. In defying them. To break a law of man is one thing... to breach the law of the fabric of reality itself is a different matter. Where are the limits? What are the consequences?

Humanity is rapidly approaching the singularity, that is, if the singularity can exist. Space might be infinite, but matter and energy is not. For all the knowledge and data the future may hold, base laws like those of thermal dynamics still hold supreme. Technology marches on regardless, pushing out and out as far as it can. It's march is waning though, like the phases of the moon, the face of science is changing. Gone is the exponential growth of the twentieth and twentieth first century, and now here is the asymptote of the future. There is still mystery though, still those that thirst for knowledge, for exploration, and for power. It is time for the final push of Earth, with the accumulation of millennia of knowledge and resources to come to fruition. This might be the last step, the final journey for mankind. Or it might be the first in a new direction...

...all of the world's eyes have turned to Saulic labs. The most expensive experiment mankind has ever committed has the attention of all. And from all fields and spheres come brave men and women. Men and women being sent out to see just what the enigma that is the teleporter that is deep under ground -- buried within one of Saulic Labs complexes. Eleven men and women are of interest for our story...

Those of the scientific or those of the professional pursuit might find themselves in long meetings and briefings deep within the ground. Holographic presentations, lectures, and all that you'd expert scientists and engineers to do in preparation for what might be the most important work of their lives. Doctors Green, Sanders, and Larsa might find themselves in this group... as well as Two Eagles and Chekovski. What they've heard? What they've been told? That is for even for them to know. ...that is if they are even at the complex yet. Some might still be enroute.

The security detail and the technical support that is on the roster for the mission are doing their own work. Triple and quadruple checking for equipment, last minute training, or going over the details of their assignments. Smith, Lt. Hawkins, Brady, Master Sargent Kofsky, and Jason all find themselves doing things of this nature. Perhaps at least... they might be attending to other affairs. Whatever suit their skills best -- and their personal pursuits.

(Fill in the scene of where your character is starting! The first post is useful for setting the mood and personality of characters. And yes. It's finally started.)

Dr. Damien Sanders staggers to the break room and makes a beeline for the coffee machine. Taking the thankfully fresh pot, he pours himself a cup, adds cream and sugar and takes a blessed mouthful of the caffeinated beverage.

"Urgh... 12 straining hours..."

He had spent time familiarizing himself with the other members of his team's medical history. A single detail might be important during the mission should someone be hurt. Downing the hot drink he pours himself another cup and takes time to savour this one.

"Leave it to some corporate washout to get bad equipment." Master Sergeant Will Kofsky is sitting on a five gallon bucket in the motor pool. He's hunched over another five gallon bucket, using a cordless drill to mix something inside. Strewn all around him are household cleaners and plastic containers labeled with different chemical compounds. As he sits, he runs a large fan at full tilt over the bucket.

Despite his rather chipper attitude about the project, Roy had a knack for making himself scarce, sometimes. Where exactly it was that he went, no one was quite sure, but there were rumors of a girlfriend...Regardless, he always showed up when he was needed, he just didn't tend to linger. There was always something he was excited about to rush off to.

Carefully coiffing his hair, Roy gives a bright smile as he strides through the main gates. Today was the day!
Of course, he had a lot of work to do still--the tech needed checking and re-checking...but he wasn't a prodigy for nothing, right?

Andre sat down, hoping no one would notice him, at least for now. He did not have the energy to address these....people, at least not enough to want to talk to them. That would mean having to be understood, and he did not believe there was a person in the room on his level intellectually.

Jason was currently in the engineering bay where various vehicles and technoligical marvels were repaired and what not .. he on the other hand was busy preparing for this mission making sure to quadruple count each and every one of his tools making sure he dosent forget any of them eventually rolling the toolcase up and slipping it into a side holster on his belt for ease of access. Next he began to go over his weapons.. standard issue weaponry polishing it up wanting to appear presentable.. eventually he finds himself done.. figuring he has time left he sits downa nd pulls a book out of his vest beggining to read.

'Dr' Charles Green sat at his computer going over the results from one of the latest experiments. Technically this was beyond where his clearance fell but only just, and it wasn't like he was copying or altering any data.
Wrong.
Every word. Every graph was being carefully stored in Charles' memory ready to be copied and studied in private later along with all the other classified data he had gathered. This was how he got away with his activities; never leave a digital trail, keep everything in the mind or written in pencil. Tricks like these, a lot of effort and a bit of luck was how Charles had managed to infiltrate Saulic and had been carefully feeding their data to a rival company for many years now. Although, at this particular moment, the spy aspect of his job was more a formality. Now that he was in, Charles' curiosity had taken over and the data he gathered was for himself.

Teleportation.
This was Saulic's current primary goal, and better still, they had it working. Sure, the process was crude, wasteful and a touch unpredictable, but it was still a principal that revolutionised the way scientists regarded the laws of physics. No longer were the laws barriers blocking concepts, now they were hurdles just waiting to be jumped. With this in mind it was no wonder that Charles craved to learn more. Who wouldn't be fascinated at the concept of defying the constants that were once thought to structure the universe?

A high pitched whine came from Charles' pocket as the alarm he had set went off. As much as it pained him, he would have to log off and attend another dull meeting. Although, to be fair it would only be dull because he already knew what was going to be said, having spent the last hour reading the subject matter. Oh well, such is the price for doing something you love for all the wrong reasons.

Sitting in front of a comdex container, a man is going over the various equipment stored inside. Several portable sonic shovels, charging units, laser cartography recorders and various computers are neatly stacked and packaged for transport. Hopefully the EMP shielding inside the storage units and the comdex box would be enough to protect the delicate electronics inside... 'But just in case'... He thinks to himself. Looking to the last of the equipment outside the box, there is a stack of old looking shovels, pick axes, who'd and wire sifter boxes, hand tools, surveyors polls, multiple tape measures in various lengths and a large toolbox full of detail brushes, trowels and dental picks for the true tools of his trade in excavations.

Satisfied with what has been packed and provided by Saulic, he puts the rest of his equipment inside and closes the shipping container. He hears the call for the next meeting and frowns slightly. Sure he understood the need to brief the members of the team about the experimental tech being used but he was tired of waiting to get started as well. A new culture to study on a heretofore never known planet on the other side of the...well an unknown world. How many others had tried to contact him about joining the team once Saulic announced the first team. A social science dream come true. But the first team was limited to those here til security issues were confirmed and locked down. He wished that he could rely on mor help then the small security detail and computers but still to be the first xenosocial archeologist would be another feather in his many accomplishments. Smiling at that thought as he enters the briefing room, he takes his normal seat in the rear to observe the others as well as listen to the latest information...

Hannah was making last-minute checks to her gear. This included familiarising herself with the weapons she'd been provided, and checking she'd packed everything she thought she might need. Of course, not knowing her destination made it pretty hard to satisfy those concerns. She was dressed in what seemed to be a neck-to-foot bodysuit of a dark grey material, with much thicker, padded black vest. A pair of small, black khaki shorts hugged her hips and butt, while a study pair of black leather boots came up to her knees. Her red curls of hair were worked into a short braid that hung down between her shoulder blades, while a small communications device was wrapped around her head, consisting of a wired earpiece, mic and some kind of thin, clear visor across her eyes.

Lieutenant Hawkins stands in front of the suit he was to wear on the voyage... checklist in hand. The bulky exo-armor suit stands still, its access panels open as technicians quadruple check all of the major and minor systems. The armor was a military prototype... something never put into full production. Even so, it was state of the art... and if he was going to be wearing it, he would be damned if he would do so without knowing all there is to know about it.

He looks to one of the technicians. "So tell me again... if we find a hostile civilization on the other side, and they capture us, this is likely the most advanced piece of technology they will find. I assume it has a self destruct mechanism built into it?"

And so it goes! He knows all the important details. This one has had a liver transplant. This one has a prosthetic arm. This one has a metal plate in their head. And yet another has asthma. ...after a few moments of relaxation. His cell phone beeps! An incoming text message informs him that the time table for the experiment has been moved up an hour.

"Stupid mucky mucks don't even know how to make proper semtex."

Luckily it doesn't explode on him! ...but that's where his expertise comes in, right? After a few minutes a guard walks into the motor pool, and after staring at Kofsky for a few moments like he is some sort of insane lunatic manages to state "Sargent Kofsky? You are asked to report to the main testing floor at 2100 zulu." With that he gives a single nod... turns on his heels. And is gone.

Despite his rather chipper attitude about the project, Roy had a knack for making himself scarce, sometimes. Where exactly it was that he went, no one was quite sure, but there were rumors of a girlfriend...Regardless, he always showed up when he was needed, he just didn't tend to linger. Carefully coiffing his hair, Roy gives a bright smile as he strides through the main gates. Today was the day!
Of course, he had a lot of work to do still--the tech needed checking and re-checking...but he wasn't a prodigy for nothing, right?

Right! A prodigy he is! ...but Roy finds a memo waiting for him when he gets to his work station. He should get to the testing floor right away!

Andre sat down, hoping no one would notice him, at least for now. He did not have the energy to address these....people, at least not enough to want to talk to them. That would mean having to be understood, and he did not believe there was a person in the room on his level intellectually.

And if that's all he is going to be doing... ...maybe there is more important things for him to do!

He gets into the first paragraph of the reading session, when suddenly... the intercom comes alive! One of the administrators orders him down to the labs!

That meeting? Just happened to be down on the testing floor!

Sitting in front of a comdex container, a man is going over the various equipment stored inside. And what do you know...? He might actually be at the wrong meeting! Too late for that now!

Hannah was making last-minute checks to her gear. This included familiarising herself with the weapons she'd been provided, and checking she'd packed everything she thought she might need. Of course, not knowing her destination made it pretty hard to satisfy those concerns. And somehow Hannah is contacted as well: Message is the same. Metting on near the experiment!

Lieutenant Hawkins stands in front of the suit he was to wear on the voyage... checklist in hand. After a few seconds of clean up... well. Hawkins is given the orders that he should report to the testing floor -- with his equipment.

Damien slumps into one of the chairs in the break room and savours the hot black caffinated elixir. When he receives the text, his cellphone starts playing Edvard Grieg's In The Hall of the Mountain King. Fishing the phone from the pocket of his lab coat, he reads the text and changes the phone alarm to go off an hour earlier before returning to his drink.

While it seemed uncommon for a meeting to be held in the labs themselves rather than one of the boardrooms, it was hardly unthinkable. It is likely that the meeting was working on some pending data or required a demonstration. Either way, it slightly unnerved Charles; any data that was not yet recorded was inherently an unknown variable, and unknown variable were one of the biggest risks to Charles' cover. While the knowledge he had already gathered would allow him to wing it for most situations, when it came to certain areas, his lack of knowledge would reveal his lack of education.

Mentally running over all the information he felt would be useful, Charles made his way through the quarantine and security checks that all researchers were required to go through to get to the primary testing chambers.

When a beeping sound came from inside her ear, Hanna lifted a hand, her fingers brushing over a button on the headset to bring the message up on the visor display. Heading off, she wandered for a while, unsure where she was going. Eventually, she fell in behind others, just hoping they were all heading for the same meeting that she had been summoned to.
