((I hope I'm doing this right, Garath-sama. Sorry this is so big. I'm long-winded.))
Derek Taylor's life was relatively unknown to most, but it was a fairly simple one. At 25, not many could say that their lives were free for whatever they desired to do during the day, night, or any other ungodly hour. He could get up in the morning and threw on anything, regardless of whether or not it matched aesthetically; he didn't work, didn't have to drive if he didn't feel like it, and could easily commute to the nearest grocery outlet—which was right down the street. At noon, he could kick off his shoes as he pleased because he owned his own condo downtown. And, typically, he usually did so every day around a quarter after the hour—with a cup of java and his laptop thrown across his lap. You see, the reason Derek could afford such a free and lavish lifestyle was primarily due to his other name and identity. Derek Taylor, better known by his pen name 'Seto Ashura', is an award-winning author primarily specializing in epic stories of romance and fantasy. At least, at the beginning of his carrier, that is...
The truth is, three years ago, he had one of the best selling books heating up bookstore shelves. But something happened, something that crumpled his resolve to write and he's been living off broken deadlines and fading royalties ever since, even while licensing discussions regarding turning his last novel into a feature-length film echo in the distance. And try as he might, he just hasn't seemed to find the strokes to get his pencil moving again. Derek, himself, is a fairly easy-going guy, a proud African American guy born and raised in the southern states and unable to shake his street-wise roots no matter how hard he tries to live a sophisticated lifestyle. He is tall, moderately built with an average physique, pale ochre brown eyes and a gentle smile. He loves anime and, if you look hard enough, it's easy to find its influence in his literary works. He tried taking martial arts in high school in order score points with the ladies, but never really followed through with either attempt. Instead, he waited until college to finally break out of his social cocoon after meeting an upperclassman by the name of Edward.
The two quickly became good friends and, even though Edward graduated and left before Derek did, it was through this closely-knit friendship that Derek managed to get through school, modeling himself from being a quiet and reserved young man into being more outgoing. It was Edward who taught him the value of friendship and how easily bonds are made, and broken. Although he enjoys his new personality, he fears he has become too arrogant and insincere these days—yet he remains unable to revert back into his old, modest ways. Since then, Derek has taken all his experienced with him and immortalizes them in his works. Most noticeably, his universal character in his novels, a feline demi-human named Seto Ashura, personifies this fragile transition between a gentle natured youth forced to become the monster it would otherwise despise. Seto is identified by his feline features, his colorful red attire, ice-blue eyes, dark skin, the unusual silver highlights in his hair, typically caramel-colored skin, and two fluffy black tails. Contrary to skepticism by critic readers, Seto's mainstay weapon of choice is an impossibly large sword-shaped wand which he wields with supernatural herculean strength. Many say believe that spotlighting such an overcompensating character only serves to showcase failures Taylor may feel in his own life—Derek says that Ashura's colossal physical strength is proof his greatest emotional weaknesses.
