Dact's Dwarf Fortress Adventure Log

Because I am bored, and curious. I've decided to start a session of Dwarf Fortress. And I've chosen to involve all of you in it! Dont you feel excited! =D

First off, I am indecisive of where I should embark... for those unsavvy with DF terms, in what climate should I start? What type of surroundings? I'll make a poll with this thread will link to. And let you decide! FANTASTICAL!

From there I plan to give regular updates and screenshots, as well as take suggestions on what I should build. SOUNDS FUN, RIGHT?!

Edit: Poll up!

According to popular demand, I have embarked on a Savage Evil Forest! The terrain looks good, if a bit eerie with spiderwebs hanging from the trees.

Oh, thats odd... five giant wild boar corpses a few yards away. I wonder what killed them.

Image

Wait a second... are they... moving? Oh... um... undead giant wild boars. Time to put that silver warhammer I embarked with to use! Not to mention my four wardogs! We will see how I fare!

Okay, so the boars didnt notice me. Got some digging done, starting to make some walls... right, need to clear some of these trees so that-

...

*facepalm*

Thats Dwarf Fortress for you!

After two or three attempts to embark with more parties, some made entirely of axedwarves, I realized it was pointless. I just couldnt recover. The initial grace period, if you could call it that, was up. And undead were swarming like they are wont to do.

So I embarked on another sight, right next to my previous failed sight. And learning from my mistakes... I've managed to make a safe start! My only loss a wardog that for some reason didnt want to come inside... just as the zombies caught wind of me.

Image

In case your curious, the zombies outside are Pangolin Men. Zombie Pangolin men. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pangolin

I'm fairly terrified. But I got walls up, and a door which is forbidden. The door is made of stone too, which is good. Because all undead are level 1 building destroyers. Which means they could bash down a wooden door.

I have my own little slice of dwarven civilization cut into the muddy rock, clay, and microcline walls beneath the haunted evil land.

Image

I have about three logs... not much, but enough to keep a few dwarves comfy. I have a little meeting hall, storage and workshops. Next I will work on a barracks. Above this level is a large silty clay deposit. I am hollowing it out to grow that staple of dwarfdom... plump helmets. And I'll hollow it out yet more to let in cave spores... which can grow into trees. Safe trees! :D

It was all going so well.... until...

A giant zombie Wren flew over my wall, then killed all but two of my dwarves. The survivors could have pulled it together, but the corpses of their slain friends soon arose to finish the job.

Right... lets try this again!

The fortress of Veshathel, Dustrings, will endure!

The good news? I re-embaked. And got my dwarves in before anything killed them.

The bad news?

Those light blue N's? They are all zombies. Dozens of them...

The bad news? The new version of DF has a save game corruption bug, and the new patch version requires a new restart. So I lose all my progress.

The good news? I tried to let in migrants, and was repaid by having my entire fortress slaughtered. And about three re-embark tries all ended in failure due to an interesting fact. Abandoned fortresses have random corpses strewn about. Evil areas raise corpses as zombies. It was so I embarked with seven dwarves all with combat skills and weapons just to have them slaughtered.

Once the dead take your fortress... its theirs.

So! New version, new world gen! OHBOY!

I knew there was a reason for not choosing the forest...;)
Why do we park on a Driveway and drive on a Parkway?

I tried playing this once, but I didn't have the patience to learn all the controls.
