The Cutest Little White-Haired BRINGER OF DEATH

Monday, August 28th, 2006

RSFA showed しにがみのバラッド today. It was quite cute with the cutest white-haired Death you could see. Slice-of-lifish in some ways.

Haruhi is scheduled for Thursdays… Yay!

And lastly, first two classes (Intermediate Mechanics and Data Mining) seem good. Will report on OpSys and JPNIII tomorrow.

Back at School

Friday, August 25th, 2006

Well, I’ve returned to school, which starts on… Tuesday? In any case, that means my schedule’s changing. My classes on Monday and Thursday start bright and early at 8:00AM, so I’ll be in bed at midnight EDT on Sunday and Wednesday. The rest of the time it won’t be later than 2.

In other news, if I allow cheating, typing speed on Dvorak is up to 32 WPM (28 AWPM). “pipian” is horrible to type. Almost as bad as “ls -lt.”

Thoughts on Dvorak…

Saturday, August 19th, 2006

I’m only a day and some in, and I’ll try to stick with it for two weeks, but here are my thoughts (after perusing other alternate keyboard layouts…):

  • I like the period on the left ring finger. It’s much more comfortable.
  • I’m not sure I agree with the hand-alternation principle… It seems more staccatto while learning at least.
  • ‘L’ really stresses the right pinky. Same as ‘;’ (for programing)
  • ‘I’ and ‘U’ should switch if hand-alternation does work.
  • I do miss the ‘Z’, ‘X’, ‘C’, ‘V’ combination (to a lesser extent ‘Q’ and ‘W’
  • ‘F’ is a bit inconvenient…

If Dvorak doesn’t satisfy me in two weeks, i’m going to try Colemak

P.S. Soon I should have some keyboard layouts prepared for Mac users…

What Would Be Nifty…

Saturday, August 19th, 2006

Supposing I stick with it…

  1. 4-key (U, H, F, J) Dvorak keycap packs for various popular keyboard models. (e.g. Model M, Dell QuietKeys, Apple Pro Keyboards, Laptops) That way the home row is easier to find.
  2. Inline USB ‘hardware Dvorak converters (also for laptops) That way there’s less to fiddle with on another computer.
  3. Alternate keycaps (e.g. AltGr, Meta, Command) along with alternate bucky-bits for Unikey Model-M-like keyboards, so I can be ‘productive’ anywhere…

At the one-day-in mark, while I can get away with not looking at the keyboard, I’m still very much tempted to, and my practical speed is about 13-15 WPM. It’s going to be slow going for the next two weeks… By which point I should hopefully be at around 40WPM, I hope…

Typing Test…

Friday, August 18th, 2006

I’ve been touch-typing QWERTY for some time, ever since I started at age 13 or so.

Thus far, here’s my stats on an Apple Pro Keyboard:

(Accuracy in keys hit/total keys for each finger, from left pinky to right pinky, and then the thumb.)

89/89, 77/80, 27/28, 26/26, 74/75, 22/23, 50/51, 04/04, 92/93
Keystrokes Per Hour: 20277
Words Per Minute: 67
Adjusted Words Per Minute: 66

The reason I’m focusing on this is a curious one. I’ve been casually interested in Dvorak for a while now, and recently, my brother came into the possession of some 15-20 Apple keyboards of various design (Yeah, I know… That’s a lot!), of which at least 5 are Apple Pro Keyboards. I figured that now was as good enough a time to start learning Dvorak, which I plan on starting after this post (to finish preparing and such), so if you see me responding slowly for the next few days, you know why.

Todo List

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

Here’s a list of things for me to remember to do:

  1. Brainstorm more ideas for navigation on the Zukan project.
    1. Perhaps using the cursor to hover over locations, or clicking on them with dynamic AJAXish positioning of the ‘location’ marker and bolding of location name.
    2. Alternately, hover over text to show location.
    3. Need to add Advanced Generation maps, but that might have to wait until I can get access to some International Emerald ROMs for proper grepping of names.
    4. In addition, I’ll probably want to construct a BDF file to convert to GDF for writing on the Advanced maps.
    5. Should organize the location names better, now that I’ve added a column that categorizes locations into Cities, Routes, and Other locations.
    6. Start thinking about the ‘initial’ locations page as well as Pokemon data arrangement.
  2. Updating this front page in order to do a mashup of interesting things, as well as adding the remaining pages.
  3. Fix GUI for Live+Press and tweak the linkback to be more like Kiera’s, because it looks cooler :3
  4. Genealogy program for Mac using Gentech specification?
  5. A new AMV?
  6. The perennials:
    1. MSF3 (Which I should get back to)
    2. NeoMUCK

New Website!

Tuesday, August 15th, 2006

Done some final tweaking on the blog and moved its base to the root directory, along with a server move! Still got a few Pages to work on from here on out (e.g. ‘Hosted Sites’, ‘Links’, a Mash-up Home rather than the Blog itself, and fixing up the About page with a FOAF link.)

As for those of you more curious as to whether or not I’m moving the Kiera route and abandoning exclusive updating of the LiveJournal, rest assured. I’m not quite ready to merge my several personas into one and as such, there will be some things posted on the LJ that I don’t feel so comfortable posting on my blog, and a lot of the more boring aspects of my life will probably stay here, since you neither know nor care about my Real Life friends (and frankly, they don’t even know this place exists!)

I’ll also keep checking your posts with my old account, though it might be preferrable for you guys to post here if it’s a crosspost. Fortunately it does have linkbacks, as you should be able to see here…

I’ll also probably be tweaking this blog in the near future (The mood icons, for example, while good, are not so ‘compatible’ with this theme, and I’m missing other useful plugins that Kiera has in spades). Also, the blog name may change as chosen, but I don’t know that for sure yet. In any case, it’s all good!

For those other sites hosted on my domain however, some parts may be broken due to a faulty command I used while mirroring, and some of the old sites that still rely on MySQL may be broken due to my decision to NOT move those databases over. Other old pages may disappear completely, but those will be mentioned as the time comes closer.

Still need to prettify the LJ Extras options in this editor though. =P

Progress in Website Design and Otherwise…

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

So, I’ve already moved all the current files from pipian.com to the new server. All that remains to be done is setting up DNS, MySQL, and Virtual Hosting. In addition, I’ve more or less finished a design for the new site, but I’m torn as to whether my blog should be the front page, or a separate page under the blog director /blog/ as it is now. I just have minor fix-ups to do before I can actually make the theme (Need to polish up the article display).

Testing LiveJournal Crossposting…

Monday, August 7th, 2006

This is a test of crossposting to LiveJournal from my other blog on my website. It appears that the “LJ Extras” tab in Word Press (with Live+Press) does need a bit more ‘scripting’ to look pretty.

What Is This? “It Is A Mystery…”

Monday, August 7th, 2006

This is the first post on the new blog for pipian.com: “It Is A Mystery…”

Now running WordPress!

I promise this will be used more than my last one…
